What is a nurse Practitioner?
 
 

Nurse Practitioners work closely with doctors to provide individualized care for their patients.

 

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse (RN) who has additional education and training in a specialty area such as family practice.  Nurse Practitioners are sometimes referred to as advanced practice nurses, or APNs.  They have a Masters Degree in Nursing and board certification in their specialty.

 

Family Practice Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) can provide health care for people of all ages and will:

 

·         Partner with patients in the management of their health

·         Document health history and perform physical examinations

·         Plan care with the health care team

·         Perform medical tests and procedures

·         Answer questions about health concerns

·         Treat common illness

·         Prescribe medications

·         Teach families about normal development and the effects of illness

·         Teach people about self-care and making healthy lifestyle choices

·         Provide referrals to consultants and community support groups
